I find the best critics (and, to be fair, the word has not carried this as a primary meaning for quite some time) are the ones who can explain why you should enjoy or respect something you wouldn’t otherwise, rather than those who can convince you to dislike something you otherwise wouldn’t.
I find the best critics do both. It’s worth saying how something falls flat, especially if you can articulate what should have been done differently. Artists struggle to improve without it and it csn give voice to the audience’s issues. But at the same time, what’s done well needs acknowledged and deserves praise.
