When women riders and drivers told us they wanted more control over how they ride and earn, we listened. That feedback led to Women Preferences, features designed to give women the choice to ride with other women. Since our first pilots last summer, we’ve heard just how much that choice matters—from feeling more comfortable in the back seat to more confident behind the wheel.

Most of the comments here seem to be talking about the politics of the gender roles, but no one really seems to be mentioning that Uber should only be used as a very last resort. Call a Taxi, a friend, take public transit. Do not support the VC startup trash that doesn’t pay their
employees“contractors” living wage.Taxi drivers and taxi companies rip off passengers. Taxi companies don’t do fixed rates agreed-upon before the trip.
I’m not going to mooch off a friend.
Public transit can’t always get me where I need to go when I need to get there in a reasonable time (but it is my first choice when it’s too far or unpleasant to walk).
If the issue is the drivers not being paid well, then tip well.
When taxis and/or public transit can improve their services to the point where Uber doesn’t replace them, then Uber will be redundant.
If you called a taxi company that didnt do fixed rates you should have looked into them before you called. If you consider a ride “mooching” I would not want to be your friend. If your public transit isnt good enough, call your local reps and COMPLAIN.
Fuck this culture of “tipping”. I wouldnt have to fucking tip if they paid their drivers. Do you tip in cash on Uber? The driver won’t know that until they get there and you just look like a low-pay customer. Do you tip in the app? Congrats, you just tipped uber. The driver may or may not receive it. Do you verify with each driver to make sure they end up getting the money? Uber has obfuscated tipping for drivers FOR YEARS.
