I’ve always thought of it as a visual metaphor for someone being klutzy. The kind of person who trips on stairs, walks into the corners of tables, etc and so has a bunch of small band-aids to cover up small bruises/cuts.

thorny bushes? climbing trees or structures? falling or hitting somethüng while skating/cycling?
