I agree with the sentiment, but is there any recent news which would make people do this?
Anyone have experience with Amazon alternatives in the US? I have also canceled Amazon prime
Depends on the product really. Like I buy alot of tot stuff, and I woukd shop BigBad, Entertainment Earth, or Hasbro Pulse before Amazon for domestic, and Goodsmile shop or even import from AmiAmi for Japanese stuff. But with shipping rates I don’t use AmiAmi anymore.
i mean it depends what you are looking for. they have their thumbs in a lot of pies. my favorite amazon alternative is the local public library, but my library is pretty awesome. only end up buying the books i really want to add to my personal library now.

I salute you, brave frog/toad! I’ve been working up the courage for years… Shameful.
Congratulations, seriously.
I stopped using mine years ago but still got a monthly “bill” of $0.00 for aws services for some reason.
I’m happy to report I’ve finally fully deleted my account. I feel so light. 🥰
Good work! I cancelled my prime subscription and have not ordered anything from Amazon 2 months ago. When my current sub time ends in October I plan to also delete my account.
I’ve been making a more conscious effort to avoid buying American ever since Trump got re-elected (both for reducing dependency or American tech firms, as well as not finanicially supporting a country with a fascist government) and Amazon was one of the easiest companies to cut out of my life.
There’s still plenty of alternative webstores in the Netherlands at least.
Would you happen to have links to some of your favorites? I’d love to start cutting off Amazon, but that’s going to be a journey… I know it’ll be worth it in the end though!
Last year I made a list for a comment on another post
Amazon alternatives for the NL:
General:
Computers:
Electronics:
- Mediamarkt
- AlleKabels - They sell all kinds of cables
Clothes:
Groceries:
Drugs and cosmetics:
Bikes:
Do It Yourself:
Office:
Furniture:
Second hand marketplace:
This isn’t an exhaustive list. There is probably many I have not mentioned.
Thank you! I appreciate the links!
for groceries there’s probably many alternatives in many other nations.
Alternatives please.
I’ve just been buying direct from smaller shops, and local where I can. It’s an adjustment but doable.
Great suggestion, funny I did not think of this earlier.
We’ve all been conditioned.

To a webshop or the media?
Webshop, lol.
I haven’t subscribed to Audible for a few years now, but a few days ago I finally managed to find time and energy to pull the files and convert them to mp3. Took a day, had to fight with the Libation app to get it running properly (if you are on Linux using it, change the temp file directory to something other than what it stupidly uses as default). But I’m so glad I finally did it, I felt joy deleting my account. I know it probably doesn’t affect anything but it made me feel warm and fuzzy.
That’s what I did 8 month back. I still have an account but collect a cart then order once every other month or so.
The level of pathetic spam to offer me to use prime again is desperate and borderline pitiful.
Nice - I’ve been prime and Amazon delivery free since December and I don’t miss it at all. Deleting my account wasn’t something I had considered, I think I’ll keep it until all the warranties run out.
You #DIDit ! https://di.day/
Opens link, sees its in German
Mein gott, muss das sein? So ein bockmist aber auch.
(thats the full extent of my German language skills)
Hahaha, that seems extensive enough :P
They are working on translating the page, but I didn’t want that to keep me from posting that awesome project :)
Good that you shared, I like knowing that these projects exist :)
Gud!
What’s the European alternative?
just out of curiosity, why does there need to be a marketplace? there are plenty of stores everywhere and 99% are online. i live in a small ass country and I’ve never had to use amazon. i just type the item name in a search engine followed by “price” in my language and it hasn’t failed. but maybe my needs aren’t specific enough?
It’s almost always possible to find anything amazon offers on other european stores. It’s not a one-stop-for-all, but that’s an unnecessary convenience.
I also do local online searches before buying on Amazon but some things they are much cheaper.
Find a webpage comparing prices from different shops and buy from shops in your country or even city. For Germany I use idealo.
I deleted mine a year ago and I’ve found, that I don’t even need it.
If I’m buying something online, I just go to the actual website of the vendor/producer
This reminds me. Where do you guys buy stuff like accessories for less known devices, e.g., retro handhelds? I buy everything on my local marketplaces, but these I can only find on Amazon or Temu/AliExpress. Any recommendations?
I don’t buy that stuff, and I got rid of my Amazon account a couple years ago, but I still buy stuff there occasionally. sometimes it’s just the only place I can find something, and I’m okay with that. as long as I’m minimizing using it.
Same. All expensive purchases are made using European online shops. The only time I use Amazon is for cheap fringe stuff that I can’t find anywhere else and where quality doesn’t matter.
Dont let perfect be the enemy of good.
ebay existed when amazon was a bookstore, i still use it…
I buy from refurbishers and modders. It’s more expensive, but got some fully refurbished and tested PS2 controllers this way.
AliExpress is the only option for some stuff like this and SBC gaming.
god damn patriot!
Ditched them and my prime account a year ago, welcome to the club!
„Thank you for your attention to this matter!“ 🤞🏻
I have one remaining but have deleted almost everything. My monthly cost is like 30 cents. :)
