Progressive Politics@lemmy.world•Trump Freaks Out After Tucker Carlson Implies He’s the Antichrist
3·1 day agoTrump is a brand. His entire business model is putting his face on other people’s products. I don’t know whose calling the shots, but it sure as shit isn’t Trump. He’s a mouth piece succumbing to old age and dementia.
I don’t think funding is the problem. Colleges receive alot of money, but I feels like the resources are spent on people that probably shouldn’t be in school.
I’m a pretty smart dude, but the fact that I qualified for a full scholarship with housing in 7th grade says alot about the state of our education system. If a teacher is teaching a hundred students that probably aren’t benefiting from it, their time and resources are spread thin.
…I don’t think it was possible to fail most of my classes as long as I showed up.

Technology@lemmy.world•Group Pushing Age Verification Requirements for AI Turns Out to Be Sneakily Backed by OpenAIEnglish
111·4 days agoI’m pretty sure the vast majority of the people who are anonymous are robots and stealth marketers. Normal people aren’t usually willing to put in the effort to maintain their privacy. They use their “anonymous” social media and AI accounts on devices tied to their verified credentials (Google, Amazon, Walmart, Microsoft, etc.)
My theory is that these companies want identity verification to prevent swarms of bot farms from clogging up their servers. Up until this point, the drawbacks of identity verification outweighed the positives.

Technology@lemmy.world•Someone finally did it: a high-end TV with a DisplayPort connection actually is coming this year, including 4K 180Hz supportEnglish
25·4 days agoDoes anything useful even come in 8K at this point? I saw it as a spec last time I went television shopping, but it seemed like something that wouldn’t be useful for another decade.

Political Memes@lemmy.world•Someone made a nonviolent luigi post and it was deleted.. wonder why?
21·5 days agoWhen my aunt was diagnosed with cancer, she quit her job and was approved for Medicaid within a two week period. The government paid for her treatment, and she went back to work a year later once her cancer was in remission.
…I don’t know how common this is in other countries. It seemed like a pretty good deal from her perspective.

2·5 days ago… people have a tendency to underestimate how prone they are to manipulation. We should amend our constitutions to include freedom of thought as a fundamental human right.

Political Memes@lemmy.world•Someone made a nonviolent luigi post and it was deleted.. wonder why?
29·5 days agoAlthough the point on cost is technically true, the average low income American manufacturing worker has 6-9 times more buying power on the international market than the average Chinese manufacturing worker. I used China as an example since they are relatively wealthy compared to the global average; the public probably wouldn’t believe me if I used South America or Africa in the comparison.
As far as quality goes, I don’t have an opinion. It’s one of those metrics that needs a definition. They tend to use information like “time waiting in the emergency room” or “distance from a general practitioner.”
The ability of a doctor to treat the most common ailments is a more informative metric. At the end of the day, that is the metric that counts.

21·6 days ago…I looked up Sangamon county, and it seems like the perfect place to build a data center. It’s in the middle of nowhere and it’s economy is non-existent. Pretty much the only thing it has is a lot of flat land.
Note: Sorry if I violated the rules with this comment. I didn’t see what sub I was posting in.

Technology@lemmy.world•Australia’s teen social media ban is a flop. But there’s no joy in ‘I told you so’English
715·6 days agoProhibition is effective, it’s just that it doesn’t work for easy to manufacture compounds such as alcohol or marijuana. Every known human culture has independently discovered alcohol, and marijuana is a weed that is ready to smoke in its natural form.
As far as social media goes, my country has reached a point where TikTok and Facebook are preinstalled on every phone. If a parent buys their kid a phone and removes them, they will reinstall themselves after an automatic update. When you take into consideration the “streamlined” registration process, one can argue this is a means to target prepubescent children.
…I guess an 8 year old could download a VPN and steal their parents identification, but I feel like some form of prohibition would help.

731·6 days agoI still think it’s a step in the right direction. Once you make it illegal for children to use social media, you can start going after the platforms for knowingly manipulating children.

Technology@lemmy.world•Cindy Cohn (EFF) Warns Jon Stewart That Americans Have to Make X and Meta ‘Less Important’English
4·7 days agoThe value of social media lies is in it’s ability to change thoughts, opinions, and long-term behavior. The public underestimates how effective this technology is, especially when it comes to children. In the absence of regulations, these platforms can make people believe just about anything by exploiting perceived peer pressure.

Technology@lemmy.world•Battery costs have declined by 99% in the last three decades, making electrified transport a realityEnglish
18·8 days agoLol. Although this claim might be technically true, comparing the cost of the first prototype lithium ion battery with a modern mass produced batteries is apples to oranges.

I feel as though people in 3rd world countries will be hit the hardest. Most of the jobs in first world countries can already be done much, much cheaper by foreign workers. Although we could outsource everything, it feels like we give people jobs just to keep people busy.
In the next two decades, I’m convinced that the countries that can’t afford to invest in AI and automation will be hit the hardest. The value of their work will be reduced, and richer nations will not freely share the technology.
…it was my point about world hunger. Things are set up to where the global poor have just enough money to by food and shelter. Their low wages are why people in my country have such a high standard of living.
