It’s probably at least partly a reaction to decades of US exceptionalism where the US (and many citizens) proclaim it’s the greatest and most developed nation on the planet (and definitely the good guys) while anyone with a little travel experience already knew that’s not the case.
What’s true though is that it’s a large but relatively young nation with the biggest military, biggest economy and biggest tech companies on the planet.
