I made a really cozy and usability-focused setup like 10 years ago, and since I made it with NixOS+home-manager I’m just carrying it over with me. It is going strong after three device swaps, two moves to a new country, and meeting a partner, with some minor changes (i3 -> sway, Nord theme -> custom base16-based, pulseaudio -> pipewire, etc)
A relationship that forces you to use a GUI when you already live in CLI is a textbook example of a toxic relationship.
Or idk maybe people have a job where it’s useful to hone your tools? This meme doesn’t make any sense.
what tool is that on the left that shows the resources?
I don’t get it. Is it saying that when you’re single you have time to tweak and fiddle your desktop, when you’re in a relationship, you don’t and just use the default?
Yes
huh. i have the left monitor desktop customized to my liking, my wife has the right one customized to her liking. we have shortcuts on each screen to make it the primary monitor depending on who’s using it.
Would you mind sharing a bit more about your setup and how y’all use it? I’m just curious, not gonna give any unsolicited advice
it’s been so long since i set it up i don’t remember much. it’s a windows machine, i had to download a utility so i could set up a batch utility to change my primary monitor without going into settings.
I see. I misread your original comment and I thought that somehow both of you could use it at the same time
I mean we probably could if I plugged in a controller with a long enough plug (fuck Bluetooth). The monitors aren’t big, but there are enough of them.
We did play chrono trigger together (we just took turns) on an emulator once, but I plugged the pc into the TV then. We had enough fun when sea of stars came out it did not take convincing to get her to play (think 2-3 player chrono trigger)
You’ve never heard of user accounts?
we could, but my wife is not the most into computers. a big reason we have not switched to linux is i barely remember how to use that CLI. I could not coach her through it right now at all. she did not like having to log out to get into her account, and what we have works. there are probably less condescending ways to mention computer functions, but this is the programming community i guess
My apologies, I didn’t mean to be condescending, just meant this as a light jab! Due to the original post, I assumed you were on linux, which is pushing the use of user accounts pretty aggressively.
nah sorry i’m just overly sensitive today, it’s been a sucky
dayweeki forget. i shoulda recognized the jab for what it was
Shhh… (this is cuter)
but thats just a single open app in the top frame? btop i believe
edit – oop after i zoomed in so i could see the gaps i realise its 3 apps. btop, htop (redundant) and yazi or ranger or superfile.
woudlnt the real implication be that the top panel is using a window manager and the bottom one is using a mint alternative?
The window manager is very customised. And “fiddling with the desktop” may include setting up tiling wm
if im not mistaken the top one is just archcraft (perhaps i3) default install, i dont see any customization.
regardless im struggling to grasp what the meme is trying to convey. :)
I think the meme is a cliche of “haha you are in a relationship so your partner takes up all your time and you don’t have any time for your hobbies”. Which sounds like a pretty toxic relationship tbh
yeah id have to agree with you on the latter, and youre probly right all together

“Mom! I want to play Woodle now!“
