Edit: For context, @[email protected] discovered that the developer of Tesseract had discretely banned numerous instances and disguised it as a server error. This included more heavily leftist instances, but also blahaj.zone. More recently, it was discovered that they had also been suppressing individual users, phrases, and communities that criticize power tripping on fedi.

Needless to say, I implore non blahaj.zone users to drop the Tesseract client (support for the client has already been dropped for blahaj). So called “liberals” like this who call out “extremism on both sides” are an insult to the values they claim to be upholding.

Mods of blahaj wouldn’t think twice to ban this dev for being annoyed by lgbtq+ community. No wonder that this dev just did the same.

I shouldn’t engage but I can’t resist. The difference is thats what mods are for. They ban problematic users and there’s modlogs for transparency. There are power-tripping mods that are trigger happy with the ban, but it is up to them to do that.

Tesseract is an app which claims to access the fediverse. It doesn’t tell you what’s being censored or even that things are being censored. It presents them as technical issues. It’s not an apples to apples comparison.

Chill out. I just explained the most possible reason of why this dev has done it. Maybe my formulation wasn’t totally clear, but my point of view is valid. It is the other thing that this dev has created a literal malvare to state his opinions about some communities and users. I don’t say that I support this dev, but I can understand the motivation to do so.

You are telling me this like I am that dev or, at least, know him. But there is a difference between protecting someone’s actions and explaining them or guessing what was the motivation. This dev has successfully dealt some damage as was intended, that is all. At least, it was just a shady censorship filter and not some real malware.

No - I’m telling you because you’re saying that a community would do something, so this dev in his app has the right to do the same thing?

Maybe no right, but certainly an ability. Because, how else would you revenge the mods/admins on the internet rather than throw some malware to them? (rhetorical question)

Bro it’s a frontend. It’s sole job is to consume data and make shit pretty.

Ah yes, the public and clearly communicated modlog vs secret banlist that gives errors db0 devs kept looking for.

Its okay to not know stuff, but try to figure stuff out before you speak?

That is the whole point. Clearly visible, easily editible filter list about which it is clearly stated in documentation was the right thing to do. But, it wasn’t an effective solution, since most admins would have changed this list almost immediately resulting in very small efficiency of this filter, compared to what was initially intended. And since this dev explicitly wanted to affect maximum amount of people for maximum amount of time, this solution was better. Many people naively think that others would play by the rules delivering their revenge/justice or whatever, but this is not how it usually happens.

Trolls are gonna troll 🤷 you do make an impressive word salad.

For anybody else. The banlist tesseract had is not on the github, it’s downloaded at build, called for and hidden on purpose.

You can do pretty much the same, toxic person.

It doesn’t take much time to figure out the rules here once you get used around and browse communities/modlog a few months deep. And it became clear to me, that there exist a lot of red flag moderators, whom it is reasonable to avoid engaging with. And also there exist other situation: when mod is relatevely OK, but the community itself is awful.

So, counter-question: you are seriously telling me that mods of blahaj instance don’t ban(especially permanently) on spot for any criticism/phobia towards LGBTQ+ community?

I’m seriously telling you to go fuck yourself, for you to say what you’ve said here, you’d frankly have to be pretty stupid, and arrogant.

Again, you don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about.

A hidden banlist on an open source frontend fron an open source discussion forum is not comparable to an openly stated and discussed policy or ruleset.

Again, you have to be stupid, and arrogant, to think otherwise.

Please go fall ass first on a rake.

Maybe you’re correct but what you fail to take into account is that Blahaj wouldn’t be underhand and secretive - plus the vast majority (maybe even all) of the instance users would agree with such a move.

Regexing an enormous blocklist in a front end whilst keeping it hidden from users is completely different.

Blahaj, by the nature of its composition, heavily mods to stop the place from turning into a toxic clusterfuck.

Somewhere lower in this thread I explained(my opinion) why this dev has used this tactic of expressing points of view instead of simply presenting a modifiable, clearly visible and documented filter with a default option, that represents views of this dev. I don’t say that this dev is right, but I can understand the logic and motivation that were used to do so. And, yes, I can also be wrong. I don’t deny it.

I have no problem with the blocklist as is, just it’s clandestine implementation on unknowing others that I took umbrage with.
